In traditional folk medicine, elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has been used in the treatment of many diseases and health struggles, especially relating to a compromised immune system.
Elderberry has components with high biological activity, primarily polyphenols, such as flavonols, phenolic acids, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins, which give the fruit its characteristic black-purple color. (1)
These polyphenols provide powerful antioxidant benefits, which help to fight oxidative stress and thus improve blood pressure, blood sugar, immune system health, antitumor activity, antioxidant activity of enzymes in the blood (including glutathione activity), and uric acid levels (reducing the risk of gout). Our organic elderberry syrup is one of the few elderberry products in the marketplace that is free of added sugar, and instead uses a base of vegetable glycerin, which is safe for those individuals dealing with blood sugar problems (e.g. type 1 and 2 diabetics).
Since we use a base of vegetable glycerin, this product can be taken multiple times throughout the day (especially at the first sign of cold, flu, and/or other infection), without having to worry about damage caused by excess sugar. Most companies are adding sugar into their elderberry syrup for taste purposes, but this can be a problem long-term, especially in those controlling their blood sugar carefully.
